From Wikipedia:

A subarachnoid hemorrhage is bleeding into the subarachnoid space—the area between the arachnoid membrane and the pia mater surrounding the brain. This may occur spontaneously, usually from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, or may result from head injury.

SAH is often associated with a poor outcome. The death rate (mortality) for SAH is between 40 and 50%, but trends for survival are improving. Of those who survive hospitalization, more than a quarter have significant restrictions in their lifestyle, and less than a fifth have no residual symptoms whatsoever.

  1. That sounds no kinds of good. Bleeding in the brain is serious.

  2. You think?

    1. :: serious stare ::

    2. Unfortunately I think Bret may not be long for this world. Type 1 diabetics often suffer much worse from even the most minor health mishaps.
      A subarachnoid hemorrhage is very serious in any case.

      1. Can there ever be an instance of just a wee bit of bleeding?
        Or is that a silly question?

      2. I agree; it don’t look good for poor ole’ Bert.

        @ Steupz;

        “a wee bit of bleeding”?

        C’mon, son…

  3. We hope he makes it though. Worse news would be depressing.

    1. Yea it would.

  4. I don’t have the Rock Of Love girls on Twitter but if anyone does, lemme know what they’re saying and I’ll add their quotes.

    You can either email me if you’re a lurker, or comment it here.

  5. Jesus. Hope he pulls through.

  9. Ugh that sucks. More crappy news: My grandpa fainted today, fell on his face and broke his nose and two vertebrae in his neck. Thank god he’s still alive and not paralyzed.

    1. Da hell. They really say a fall is a huge concern for senior citizens. That’s a lot of damage though; most of them break their hip.

      And a hip injury for an old person is serious stuff.

    2. I hope your grandpa recovers soon Christina

      1. Thanks so much. I just talked to my Mom and she said he’s going to be okay but if he falls again it will probably be it for him. They didn’t even call an ambulance! They drove him to the hospital with his head in my uncle’s lap. Crazy-ass old people!

      2. yup. same here. sorry to heat that, but good to hear he is okay.

  10. Me too….I hope he’s okay…:(

  11. What is up with Bret, two hospital stays in a month? I hope he makes a quick recovery….he has kinda grew on me

    1. Yeah, me too.
      Not the women, though.

      1. Well, I know Bert didn’t grow on me, but still, nobody wants him to die or anything…

        :(

      2. Agreed not the women….I gon’t think there is one from that show I am a fan of….but for Bret he is the only reason I am watching Donald Trump right now…LOL

  32. Praying for Bret Michaels. Wish I knew what hospitals & doctors are providing his care as it can make a world of difference. This is serious BIG TIME especially with complications from his Type 1 Diabetes.

    Neurological Resource
    Source
    …….Partial Info on above site ….
    Massive Subarachnoid hemmorrhage is a serious, life-threatening type of stroke caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain. A stroke occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen because of an interruption of its blood supply. SAH can be caused by a ruptured aneurysm. One-third of patients who suffer an SAH will survive with good recovery; one-third will survive with a disability; and one-third will die.

    What are the symptoms?

    If you or a loved one experiences symptoms of an SAH, call 911 immediately!

    * sudden onset of a severe headache (often described as “the worst headache of my life”)
    * nausea and vomiting
    * stiff neck
    * sensitivity to light (photophobia)
    * blurred or double vision
    * loss of consciousness
    * seizures

    Common problems faced by patients following brain injury include physical limitations and difficulties with thinking and memory. Some of these deficits may disappear over time with healing and therapy. The recovery process is long, and it may take weeks, months, or years to understand the level of deficits incurred and for the patient to regain function.

    * Speech and language deficits can make self-expression difficult. Aphasia is a total or partial loss of the ability to understand or use words. It is caused by damage to the brain’s language center. Some people recover from aphasia after a brain injury, while others may have permanent speech and language problems. Less common problems include understanding what is being said or having trouble reading and writing.

    * Weakness or paralysis in the arms and legs may occur following an aneurysm rupture. This problem usually affects either the left or the right half of the body and may include the arm, leg, and face. This weakness may improve over time, and rehabilitation may help a patient become stronger and learn to function at the best of his or her ability.

    * Visual problems may occur because of bleeding into the eye or damage to the nerves that send or interpret signals from the eye to the brain.

    * Seizures may occur after an aneurysm ruptures. During a seizure, part of the body may begin to shake or twist. Seizures usually stop on their own, but medicine is available to prevent seizures or stop them when they are occurring. A person who suffers more than one seizure is said to have epilepsy.

    * Side effects of medications may produce rashes, itching, nausea, changes in appetite, and sleepiness. The doctor will review your past medical history to try to determine whether you are at risk of having a side effect. However, reactions to medications usually cannot be predicted, and the first clue likely will appear when you notice something different. Tell your nurse or doctor if you are having a problem that your medications might be causing.

    * Fatigue is an overwhelming lack of energy that is commonly seen after a brain injury. The sleep lost in the NSICU also contributes to this fatigue. It may be present for many weeks after you are discharged from the hospital. Fatigue will decrease over time as your physical fitness improves. Regular sleep habits and daily naps will reduce your fatigue.

    * Headaches are common after SAH. They tend to improve as time goes by.

    * Short-term memory loss may cause you to not remember what you did this morning, or whom you talked to on the telephone. You could get lost while driving and forget how to go home or to other familiar places. You may have problems learning new things and remembering old things.

    * Lack of attention and concentration may make it hard to stay focused on a task or problem. You may be easily distracted. It may be easier to focus on one task at a time. Try to do things in a quiet setting.

    * Change in perception may make people, places, and things appear different than they did before your brain injury. An aneurysm survivor once likened her experience to coming home after a long trip and finding that everything in the house had changed. The house and furniture was still there, but everything looked and felt different.

    * Difficulty with organization may make you forget how to go about daily chores such as cooking a meal, or cleaning your house. It is best not to do too many things at once. Using timers, pillboxes, calendars, notebooks, day planners, and voice recorders can be helpful.

    * Personality changes can occur after a brain injury. These changes can range from a lack of get-up-and-go to mood swings to severe depression. You may become more irritable and may cry easily. Signs of depression should be reported to ensure proper professional help and medication.

    There have been no updates on Bret’s condition for 2 days. Just massive headache, ICU, tests done. Why not?

    1. Last time they mentioned a location they said San Antonio where he had the surgery earlier but now they are saying he has been moved and won’t reveal the location. Anyone live in Texas? What facility dose the Bush family use when at home? Maybe the same location Bret is.

      1. I live in San Antonio actually, but I just moved here so I wouldn’t be that much help.

  33. Just adding – Bret’s SAH apparently occurred at his brain stem which increases risk of death exponentially. Average age for any type of SAH is 50.

    When I first heard, my immediate thoughts were profound sadness, then that he is going to die or be severely disabled. Can you imagine him not being able to speak?

    All meditations being devoted to him and his family. Keeping a blue candle lit (for healing).

  34. You’re a big fan, Jo?
    Like before Rock of Love?

  35. To steupz

    Yes, big fan. I’m way older than he is – at 62 an ‘aging flower child’ – Fan since glam Poison days.

    At wiki: Bret Michael Sychak, March 15, 1963 (the Ides of March)

    Dammit – so young, his daughters

    Last valid update: In ICU in critical condition.

  36. damm I’m not bret michaels fan and I’m really unfamiliar with his rock music but my prayers goes out to dude I hope he pulls through but how do you even get a brain hemorrhage WOW

  37. Damn hope he will be ok.

  38. To PIMPBOYBROOKLYN77

    Your query “but how do you even get a brain hemorrhage WOW”

    Who knows exactly the how or why of it.It’s a stroke.

    There are many types of strokes, i.e. the mildest or warning is TIA’s (Transient Ischemic Attack) or mini-strokes

    Bret Michaels has had a MASSIVE stroke at his brain stem called a subarachnoid hemmorrhage links explaining this are in previous posts.

    Hope he had advance directive paperwork in place. Were it me with the survival prognosis mentioned in previous posts being so grim, I’d want the plug pulled —

    Prior to today erroneous links on the net by IDIOTS already were reporting he had died. Not true.

    I’m looking for any Valid updates today.

    His will to live amazes me. Doctors are still checking him every 2 weeks to find the elusive aneurysm. It is not unusual for a second event to occur with a bad outcome.

    Continuing good thoughts for his complete recovery in rehab and that he ‘Rocks On’ living a full life to enjoy grandchildren and maybe great grandchildren.

    Jo

    1. It’s fantastic that Brett’s going to pull through this- he says this has inspired him to make his own “bucket list.” lol
      The lady doc who’s always on the Today Show said that the rehab to fix the part of the brain that got affected will take most likely months, so maybe jumping back on to his tour (which now should be sell-outs) isn’t realistic.
      I’d keep the focus on spending time with his beautiful daughters- the shows and the crowds will be there for him later. just mo.

      1. No, Paul, you’re dead on, no pun intended.

        Jo is right; it’s highly probable that he could have a second and even worse recurrence.

        The last thing he should be thinking about is his stupid tour. He’s lucky he pulled through, but if Bert isn’t careful, he could easily relapse.

  45. I’ll be damned! Bret is one of the final 2 on Celebrity Apprentice as I discovered Sunday night. It repeats 8-10pm on CNBC on Friday (maybe Saturday).

    Bret appeared on Ellen when the previously taped episodes of Celebrity Apprentice began airing – promoting the show. When Ellen asked about his participation he said something like “Well don’t blink or you’ll miss me” making me think he did not last long.

    The finale is LIVE. He and Holly Robinson-Peete are supposed to be there on Sunday, May 23rd. Will he be able to make it?

    He said “Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness” – Just don’t count Bret Michaels out!! Maybe he’ll appear via satellite from wherever he’s recuperating. I’m sure Donald Trump and Mark Burnett must have all the bases covered.

    I’ve heard no health updates since Bret went into a rehab facility following that potentially deadly brain bleed and his doctors were still looking for an elusive aneurysm that they’d not found yet. Plus I don’t know all the triggers, but do know that with this type of health event it is not uncommon to have a 2nd more serious brain bleed.

    I’m just glad he had excellent doctors and a strong will to survive the brain hemorrhage!

    The question: Will he be the Celebrity Apprentice and win the $250,000 for his American Diabetes Association charity (to add to the $140,000 he won already? Does the 2nd place person win anything?

    Jo

    Is It Smart for Bret Michaels to Fly to Apprentice Finale?
    http://www.comcast.net/articles/entertainment-eonline/20100522/b182448/

    All this talk about the recently hospitalized , then discharged , then re-hospitalized and again released Bret Michaels flying across the country to attend the Celebrity Apprentice finale has us wondering: is it really safe for him to make the trek?

    Michaels’ rep is saying he’s not in tip-top shape, but well enough for the much-anticipated trip. Still, E! News consulted physician Dr. David Baron—who has not treated the rocker—and he tells us that while Michaels might be OK to fly, he certainly wouldn’t recommend it…

    “Being on blood thinners and flying is no problem,” Baron explains. “My concern would be, considering that lightning has struck twice in this man’s life at such a young age, and both of these events are potentially life-threatening, I would say, ‘That’s it, I’m pulling the plug. You are not going anywhere for the next three or six months. I want to…make sure we have turned over every stone, and that you are stable, healthy and as well-protected as possible.’”

    The same goes for that concert tour Michaels is already talking about embarking on. “I would read him his rights about what could happen if he has a life-threatening stroke,” says Baron.

    “Sometimes a mini-stroke, what sent Michaels back to the hospital earlier this week, is a precursor to what could come. Assuming the guy has good doctors, and that he is a reasonable adult, he will understand what is at stake here. ‘ The show must go on’ is not a good excuse to risk your life.”

    The hole recently discovered in the Poison frontman’s heart has led him to take the blood-thinning prescription Coumadin, which, while common, actually may put Michaels at higher risk for health woes—similar to his earlier brain hemorrhage—since it results in a higher likelihood of bleeding.

    According to Baron: “The real issue about putting someone on Coumadin is that you really have to monitor it and do a very simple blood test so we know exactly how much we want to be there to be based on the blood test.

    “Even when you do it perfectly, there are risks to this medication because if you accidentally get hurt, you could bleed. You have to have a little more of a conservative lifestyle when you are on this drug. Anything that carries the risk of blunt trauma, you might suggest that the patient not be involved.”

    Like, say, flying?! Or how about rocking out onstage where props are strewn about left and right?

    If he participates, I hope it is via satellite and he is in a medically safe setting/environment.

  50. Maybe Trump is consulting with Bret’s doctors and if they feel it would be safe to travel to NYC with qualified medical professional(s), Trump will send his private jet for the round trip.

    Bret has been dealing with potentially life-threatening illnesses since childhood – Type 1 diabetes insulin dependent 4 injections a day … and now acute appendicitis, brain hemorrhage, rehab, complications, TIA mini stroke, congenital Patent foramen ovale (hole in heart) discovered/diagnosed See link for explanation: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/patent-foramen-ovale/DS00728, on blood thinners…

    Always consider myself strong though were all this happening to me, I don’t think I’d survive.

    Worried for him….
