Ok I need some guy advice. Father’s Day is in 2 months. I’m thinking about getting my man a bigger LCD. But plasma & DLP are cheaper. I want to get him a 60″. I was thinking about 72″, but that’s just showing off. Do you think I should go with the LCD, which is a lot more lightweight & easier to handle, or should I get a DLP (which I can’t mount on a wall) or a plasma? Also he’s a gamer, so he has to have full HD (1080i). Which type is better?
I’m not a guy but I am sure he’d want the bigger screen with the best resolution. If you can’t mount it on the wall I bet he could.

I’d go with 60″ personally. I’d have to do a bit more research, but I think I’d go with either the LCD or Plasma. Whichever is easier for you to handle. I’m not sure about him, but he might like the LCD.
I have a plasma, and I love it. I’ve heard that plasmas actually last longer than LCDs too. Since it’s cheaper you might want to choose that, but again, he might prefer an LCD.

Let me preface this by saying that I’m no expert on Televisions, but the hardcore gamer in me will always choose performance over portability. I also like to sit close to the TV when I play games, so wall mounts aren’t my preference. Also, iirc, Plasma TVs are susceptible to burn-in from images that stay on the screen for an extended period of time. This would not only include network logos but health bars and HUDs from games.
So my uninformed vote goes for the DLP.

I appreciate your input, everyone. I’ve now decided I’m going with the DLP. The one we have now is a 40(?) inch LCD (Bravia). I do remember hearing about certain wall-mount tvs with burnt-in images, and I forgot so I’m glad you guys reminded me! The DLP (@ Jess) is also ideal because of his kids. My son is almost 14 so he’s cool with a wall mount, he has an LCD now.
Anyway I found the best deal! Best Buy had this for $1799 & I got 10% off for being approved for a Best Buy reward zone credit card. I don’t like credit cards, so I plan on paying it directly off & cutting it up. But JaDorae is right; this is the cheapest & I’ll go with it.

Okay, here’s my two cents. First, Full HD or true HD is not 1080i, it’s 1080p. i stands for interlaced while p stands for progressive. There is a HUGE difference between the two. This amounts to the way the picture is refreshed/displayed.
Second, don’t get the DLP, not only is the contrast ratio usually lower but the projection can look horrible from every angle unless you’re sitting right in front of it.
Now, lets talk LCD and Plasma. Here’s the major differences. Plasmas tend to have greater contrast ratios than LCDs, meaning whites are whiter and blacks are blacker. Greater contrast will amount to greater quality. Plasmas have LCDs beat in that category. LCDs on the other hand have a wider angle of viewing (~170 degrees), meaning you can watch the screen from just about anywhere. Plasmas have this too but reflect sunlight/light more easily which may cause some glare. This isn’t really a problem if you’re in a controlled environment where the blinds or curtains can be closed. If he’s into gaming, check the response time on the television. The lower the response time the better. High response times can equal slightly sluggish(lag) controls. This isn’t really a big deal, but if he’s into something competitive like Call of Duty or Halo, then precise control is a must. As for burn in, you don’t really need to worry about it. This was more of a problem a couple of years ago when the tech wasn’t up to snuff, so don’t worry about it.
Price wise, LCDs are generally cheaper than Plasmas which makes them more affordable. But what you save in money you tend to lose in quality. To be honest, the common consumer cant tell the difference between 720p and 1080p so don’t fret on choosing Plasmas over LCDs or vice versa.
Here’s some advice, if you have time, go to a Best Buy (or whatever place you plan on buying the tv from) and just look around. Look at the DLPs, LCDS, and Plasmas. See what catches your eye. Look at it from different angles, see if the quality looks different from say the front. You’ll see why I said “no” to DLPs. LCDs and Plasmas on the other hand, I doubt you’ll notice any difference so stick to these.
So here’s what you’re looking for:
1)1080p
2)Contrast Ratio (the greater the better)
3)Response time (the lower the better)
4)Stick to Brands like Sony and Samsung (they make the best TVs)

When I talked about response times, don’t get confused.
A response time of 4 or 5 is better than a response time of 9 or 10. The lower the number, the faster the response time. I know this stuff can get confusing.

I have a friend with a dlp projection tv, and honestly, they’re not like they used to be, where you couldn’t see the screen unless you were looking at it dead-on. Our family room is so big though,so no one will need to sit @ a side angle.
