Mel-Licious’ Dexter Recap Season 4: Episode 3
The third episode of Dexter opens with a a scene familiar to most of us… sunshine blazing down, lots of people poolside, and tons of meat being cooked on an open grill.
Its a backyard barbecue, a ritual which Dexter thinks of as “a hold over from the last ice age, when food was scarce and men had to work together to ensure that the whole tribe eats” as he blends tequila laden margaritas for the attendant neighbors.
He makes the rounds, offering margaritas to the adults and a soda to Rita’s daughter, Astor, who is alternating between acting like a pissy little brat and flirting with Jessie, the teenage son of one of the neighbors.
At this point, Rita comes up and asks to speak to Dexter ‘for just a second’ (Uh-oh, here we go again.)
She lets Dexter know that’s she’s just gotten off the phone with Dr. Montgomery - the physician who treated him after his accident - and wants to know why Dexter didn’t inform her of his concussion. As usual, Dexter’s answer is that he didn’t want her to worry.
Rita goes on to state, in a petulant voice, that Dexter was also not supposed to drive for ten days after his accident, and he didn’t listen. So now she’s insisting upon chauffeuring him around. To work, and back home; everywhere.
(Now that’s oh so convenient. Not.)
Dexter argues that it’s unnecessary, and Rita counters by pouting and saying he hasn’t been the most “present” husband and father over the past few weeks.
Pick Your Battles
Dexter decides to choose his battles wisely, theorizing that if he gives in on this issue, she’ll be easier to deal with later. And so he placates Rita by telling her she’s right and apologizing, then he hands over his car keys. Having “won”, Rita steers Dexter back to the grill so that they can go eat.
Around the neighbors again, they make the usual small talk, during which the problem of the neighborhood vandal is brought up. Apparently someone has been having a field day smashing windows & mailboxes, and defacing fences.
As the the neighbors stand around, griping about ‘feeling unsafe’ & needing to look out for each other, Dexter reflects that “The danger of community is that those who don’t belong are looked upon with suspicion. Those of us who prefer to work by ourselves, the lone wolves, are at risk of being singled out.”
He watches as another one of the neighbors playfully pushes Cody (Rita’s son) into the pool, and thinks, “So I become an expert at blending in, camouflaging myself; becoming one of the guys.” And Dexter tries to do that, by emulating this trick with Astor, only to fail miserably, because Astor is ‘humiliated’, and Rita is taken aback.
“Dexter! What were you thinking?” She scolds him as she helps Astor dry off. “Uh… she was wearing a bathing suit?” Dexter responds lamely, unable to communicate why he just doesn’t get it. (Way to blend in, Dex.)
The next scene isn’t nearly quite so cheery. Late at night, we see Tarla, the woman the Trinity Killer targeted in the last episode, crying hysterically as she drives up to an abandoned warehouse. The Trinity Killer, seated behind her in her minivan, tells her “We’re here. Stop right here.”
As she parks, Tarla looks over her shoulder at the killer, terrified. He gets out of the minivan, and takes out the same straight razor that used to kill his last victim, and cuts the plastic restraints he used to secure Tarla’s wrists to the steering wheel.
Then the Trinity Killer leads her by the hand into the warehouse, up to the sixth floor. The next thing you know, he’s got Tarla restrained against him, looking out a set of open cargo doors. After staring out at the view of Miami skyline for a moment, and remarking upon how pretty it is, Trinity then coldly informs Tarla, “Okay, now. It’s time for you to jump.”

Mel… don’t you find Lundy, creepy?
I surely do. And not just because Deb used to bone his old wrinkly ass.
( Ew.)
He’s played by yet another really good actor, Keith Carradine.
This show has quite a stellar cast…
Started giving this show a chance by watching season1, episode 1. It wasn’t half bad.
I was wondering why there wasn’t a Dexter recap this week!! Glad 2 see it up.
LOVE the avatar Massie!
Yeah, I saw u said 2 change our avi’s, so u know I had 2 represent Jersey
Massie, girl, no. No no no…
lmao!!! You know it looks good Jess!!! Nice and big too. lol.
Massie, you realize you are the only good thing about the state of New Jersey, right?
I’m not actually watching, but I’m reading the recaps religiously. They’re a great read.
Me too! Great job Mel!
Well hello there… grrr
I’ll speak to you when you change your avatar. No sooner.
Thanx, Poseidon…
There, I did.
Thank you. I have to clear the ol’ cache!
Thanks, Siege…
I don’t watch the show either, but I don’t think I need to after reading the recap.
No, you really should watch; there’s so much detail that I’m forced to leave out for “brevity’s” sake…
I can only relate just a little bit of the subtle, dark humor of this show… and it’s creepy & tension filled moments are very well done; I think you’d enjoy it, Ste…
So Steupz is a dark, creepy & tense kinda guy? Lol JK
:: whistling & looking the other way ::
I love the No Smoking sign Poseidon. What about Mary Jane?
I smoke. Ciggies and Jane. But Bourgy is a designated ‘No Smoking’ area.
*gives Mel the evil eye before she says ‘Ew’*
I used to love my weekly weed. Now it’s more like once a month or every other.
Pish posh. *blows smoke in Poseidon’s face*
::singing::
I’m in love with Mary Jane, she’s my main thang; she makes me feel all right… she makes my heart sing…
What kind of cigars?
*sings*
And when I’m feeling low, she comes as no surprise. Turns me on with her love, takes me to paradiseeeeeeeeeeee.
omgoodness dexter needs to kill someone already…geesh!!! is it just me or is this season more focused on the trinity killer
Fret not. Dexter usually kills a victim every other episode…
Good recap Massie. This is only my second time watching Dexter but I am liking it more and more.
John Lithgow’s character is sick as hell but his range as an actor is awesome. He is just as believeable as the trinity killer as he was playing the comedic role of Dick Solomon.
So, so sorry Massie. I meant good recap Mel.
No worries, Joann… *lol
And yes, Lithgow is amazing…
